It&#8217;s a new addition to our website and is designed to be very interactive and social. Alabama nature photographers are uploading images for your viewing pleasure, conversations are starting about great places to canoe or camp. Alabama teachers are meeting there to share information about outdoor classrooms such as our Discovering Alabama Model School.</p>
<p>We have groups with such titles as ALABAMA NATURE IN ART, ALABAMA GARDENERS, HIKERS GROUP, CANOE FANS, GREEN LIVING, FRIENDS OF HURRICANE CREEK, and new groups are being formed daily! Come and start your own group and become part of our community, create your own forum or blog. Upload videos or still photos, talk to other Discovering Alabama fans from around the state. Join us today and tell your friends about it. You can even talk to other members through the private message system. <p>The program explores the trauma and uncertainty imposed on humans, animals, and ecosystems by the BP Deepwater Horizon Oil Spill that began in April 2010 and continues to this day.</p>
<p>“The impact of this tragedy will be with us for a long time,” said Dr. Doug Phillips, Host and Executive Producer. “We felt it necessary to explore the consequences from a natural history perspective and our own, uniquely Alabama perspective.”</p>
<p>The <em>Discovering Alabama</em> series is a production of the Alabama Museum of Natural History, The University of Alabama in cooperation with the Alabama Center for Public Television and Radio (CPTR) and Alabama Public Television (APT). In addition to Phillips, CPTR producer Wendy Reed, <em>Discovering Alabama</em> producer Roger Reid, and Barry Brooks of Brooks Audio Production were honored.</p>
<p>This is the second year in a row the series has been honored. In 2010, <em>Discovering Alabama</em> was awarded an Emmy<sup>®</sup> for the program <em>Discovering Alabama</em>: <em>Alabama in Space.</em></p>
<p><em>Discovering Alabama</em> programs are correlated with the Alabama K-12 Course of Study and, with accompanying Teacher Guides, are used in classrooms throughout the state. <p>“Discovering Alabama,” an award-winning nature television series  produced by The University of Alabama’s <a href="http://amnh.ua.edu/">Alabama  Museum of Natural History</a> and its <a href="http://www.cptr.org/">Center  for Public Television and Radio</a>, has earned an Emmy Award in the  2010 <a href="http://www.natassoutheast.tv/">National Academy of  Television Arts and Sciences Southeast</a> competition.</p>
<p>Dr. Doug Phillips, creator, executive producer and host of the  Alabama Public Television series; Wendy Reed, CPTR producer; and Roger  Reid, writer, producer and director, won for their efforts in developing  the “Discovering Alabama” episode titled “Alabama in Space.”</p>
<p>The program highlights the role Alabama plays in space exploration.</p>
<p>“We put a man on the moon, and there is so much more space science  and environmental science that is happening at NASA’s Marshall Space  Flight Center in Huntsville,”Phillips said.</p>
<p>“Discovering Alabama: Alabama in Space” takes viewers behind the  scenes at Marshall, the National Space Science and Technology Center and  the U.S. Space and Rocket Center.</p>
<p><a href="http://www.discoveringalabama.org/">Discovering Alabama</a> was created by Phillips in 1985. For 25 years, it has brought the  natural wonders of the state to Alabama Public Television viewers. The  series is a production of the Alabama Museum of Natural History and The  University of Alabama in cooperation with the Alabama Center for Public  Television and Radio.</p>
